Marangu Route

Marangu Route Kilimanjaro

The Marangu Route is a unique way to Climb Kilimanjaro since it has permanent overnight huts, which makes it popular with hikers who want to make things easier. The "Coca-Cola Route" was the first commercial trail up the mountain, and it is still one of the busiest. The path winds through a lush rainforest with waterfalls that cascade down rocky outcrops, unusual alpine plants, and open slopes that gradually ascend into the majestic Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks.

The short schedule doesn't give you much time to get used to the altitude, even if it's thought to be one of the simplest routes. Adding a night at Horombo Hut is a good idea. Trekkers go up and down the same trail, enjoying both comfort and stunning views on this straight yet rewarding journey to Africa's highest peak.

Route Distance

The Marangu Route covers about 72 to 82 kilometers, or 45 to 50 miles, round-trip.

Climb Duration

Most Marangu Route climbs take 5 or 6 days, with 6 days strongly preferred.

Trail Difficulty

The route is moderate, though shorter climbs make summit success harder.

Route Scenery

The trail passes through rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert, with views of Mawenzi.

When to Climb

Best Time for Marangu Route Climbs

The Best Time to climb Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route is during the two drier windows, namely, from December to mid-March and from late June to October. It is because the trails are more stable, the views are clearer, and a better chance of steady climbing conditions. To be precise, January, February, and the period from July to October are often the most recommended months for Climbing Kilimanjaro.

Month Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
Max Temp (°C) 24 25 25 23 22 22 22 22 24 24 23 23
Min Temp (°C) 14 14 15 15 14 12 10 11 12 14 15 14
Rainfall (mm) 47 42 119 327 174 41 31 21 20 41 88 63

At 5,895 meters, Kilimanjaro is not a small mountain you simply walk up. The altitude is serious, and poor decisions show quickly. Cheap climbs often cut the wrong things. Good guides, proper gear, and real safety support are what truly matter.
