Quick Answers
Have a few questions before choosing the Rongai Route climb on Kilimanjaro? Planning this climb involves a lot to consider, from route length and difficulty to acclimatization, packing, and the best time to go. This section brings those key answers together in one place, so the Rongai climb feels easier to understand and much easier to prepare for.
The Rongai Route is often described as the easiest route to climb Kilimanjaro. It is a gradual and steady climb. However, the Rongai Route lacks a strong acclimatization profile, which makes it more challenging to tackle than the Machame or Lemosho routes. There are two options- the 6-day and 7-day Rongai Route climb.
The trekking distance for the Rongai Route is approximately 79 km (49 miles).
The minimum number of days required is 6. If you need an extra day of acclimatization, the climb can be done in 7 days.
The summit success rate for the Rongai Route is higher for the 7-day trek option as compared to the 6-day trek option. As per average success rates across all operators, the 7-day trek has an 80% summit success rate, and the 6-day trek has 65% success rate.
As we have already discussed, the Rongai Route is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. The route has low crowds and goes through remote wilderness areas. If you choose this route, you’re definitely going to see wildlife in the initial days. First, you have to cross through the rainforest, then ascend through the moorlands, and then go up the high alpine zones, finally finishing the glacial zone.
The main dry seasons are usually considered the Best Time to climb Kilimanjaro, with January to mid-March bringing warmer days and a quieter feel on the trail. Then there is June to October, which is more popular, generally drier, and often colder as you gain height.
And if you are trying to narrow it down further, July to September is usually the sweet spot. The weather is often clearer, the views are better, and the route tends to feel more reliable day to day. Rongai can still work well in the shoulder months too, which is one reason many climbers like it. But when people want the best balance of stable conditions and good visibility, those midyear months are usually where the conversation lands.
