Umbwe Route Kilimanjaro
The Umbwe Route is rarely climbed and provides a straightforward route up the southern aspect of Africa's highest mountain. Due to the topography and the rapid rate of altitude gain, this route is only suitable for those already acclimatized. You will achieve this by spending the first three days of this trek itinerary climbing nearby Mount Meru (4,556m), before then ascending the Umbwe Route to arrive at Barranco Camp.
From Barranco Camp, you then join the southern circuit and follow the Barafu Route to reach the summit via Stella Point. While the Umbwe Route is a non-technical climb, it does offer steep ascents and requires trekkers to scramble over rocks and tree roots at specific points. It is the most challenging and direct route up the mountain. The fitness and stamina of hikers may be tested along the way, making it best suited to experienced mountain trekkers seeking a challenge.
Route Distance
The Umbwe Route covers about 53 kilometers (32 miles) from the start.
Climb Duration
Most Umbwe Route climbs take 5 to 6 days, sometimes stretching longer.
High Difficulty
It is extremely demanding due to steep trails and quick altitude gain.
Wild Scenery
The route passes through rainforest, along narrow ridges, and offers dramatic views of Kibo.
